On 13 September 2010, a promotion of the competition for the Centre for the Promotion of Science and the Art Campus in New Belgrade urban block 39 was held in hotel Holliday Inn, in Belgrade. The goal was to introduce the programme and goal of the first international competition held in Serbia after 30 years, and to invite all the architects to take a part in it. The Promoter of the Competition is Ministry of Science and Technological Development, Republic of Serbia, and it is organized following the recommendations of UNESCO and in cooperation with the Association of Architects of Serbia, Association of Belgrade Architects and UIA (International Union of Architects).
The event was opened by the Minister of Science and Technological Development, Mr. Božidar Đelić. He stated that this competition should result in an architectural design of a building that was going to be a landmark of Serbia - by its architecture, content, as well as Science and Art Campus as its surrounding.
The Competition is a part of the programme for investment in the science infrastructure, which is financed by European Investment Bank, and is worth 20 million Euros - 5% of the total investment programme. Minister declared that the Centre would be an integral part of the educational system in Serbia and would raise level of knowledge of the whole nation.
Jelena Ivanović Vojvodić, Serbian architect and member of the team for the preparation and organisation of the Competition, pointed out that New Belgrade was built as a result of many architectural competitions, and that this Competition was a great opportunity to continue that tradition. She introduced the visitors to the architectural programme of the Competition, noting that the four main functions of the building would be an interactive exhibition space, science club with laboratories and classrooms, planetarium and multifunctional congress hall. A science garden - outdoor part of the Centre where one can also find exhibits, will have a notable role in the life of the Centre.
Miomir Korać, scientist and archaeologist, said that the Centre for the Promotion of Science would be a place where children would love to go and spend half of the day researching all the hands-on exhibits and having fun in coming up with new and interesting conclusions in the field of science.
After the press conference, a small presentation of the competition was held by the most people involved in the preparation of this Competition: Darko Đukić, president of the PIU - Project Implementation Unit, Regis Fonlladosa, representative of COWI, Infrastructure Projects Facility-Technical Assistance Window, financed by the EU and the IPF team: Jelena Ivanović Vojvodić, architect, Branka Tmušić, architect and Srđan Verbić, scientist.
This Competition is supposed to be the first step in turning block 39 into a modern Campus of Science and Art, which is a long-term vision for this New Belgrade block.
