What is the competition ?
The competition is seeking ideas to deal with sea level rise from 2030 and into the future. Put simply it is an international ideas competition which aims to positively engage in thinking about the future of Sydney Harbour framed by our changing climate. Sydney is a creative, global, and waterfront city that is in a unique position to tackle climate change and see the benefits of being and an ‘early adapter' and world leader in climate-friendly thinking.
Why Sydney harbour?
Sydney's iconic harbour is a globally significant stage for annual events including the New Years Eve Fireworks, Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and other festivals - Our harbour is recognized as one of the best in the world - we must work together to protect the harbour's iconic value.
The harbour provides a great platform to engage positive thinking about our shared futures that can be communicated as a model of adaptation for urban waterways and other Australian and international coastal cities.
Who is AILA?
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) is a professional body of planners and designers who approach our landscapes as sustainable systems. We appreciate the ‘big picture' while dealing practically with smaller scale site based issues. Landscape Architects have been active in both public agencies and private practice over the past 40 years and have undertaken many visionary planning strategies and project designs to restore, enhance and protect the foreshores of Sydney Harbour. We are experienced at leading cross-disciplinary teams and engaging directly with communities, all levels of government and working with corporate organizations.
Who is the competition for?
As adaptation to climate change will effect everyone we are inviting submissions from professionals, primary, secondary and university students as well as organizations who are interested in policy development in this area and are responsible for the long term sustainable management of Sydney Harbour.
If you want to make a difference - join us on the pathway to adaptation.
How will the competition create positive change?
We'd really like to see Sydneysiders become ‘early adapters' to climate change.
Through engagement with climate adaptation the competition aims to explore the new types of partnerships that will be required to adapt to our new climate. We are aiming to get people thinking beyond the current focus on mitigation and see the potential co-benefits of early adaptation.
What's in it for me, my organisation or school?
The ideas competition aims to promote collaboration, knowledge sharing and capacity building for climate adaptation through landscape systems thinking. You will have an opportunity to establish new partnerships and align with people and organizations who share your commitment to real change for climate adaptation and see Sydney Harbour as a showcase for exemplary sustainable development.
When will it happen?
Competition launch is 19th April 2010, entries close on 30th June, with winners to be announced on 22nd July 2010. Both the launch and winners announcements will coincide with special events aimed at attracting wide spread media interest in the ideas generated by the competition.
Who will be involved?
We see it is important that a platform of competition support comes from a broad range of community and corporate organizations, primary and secondary schools, universities, all levels of government responsible for planning, designing and sustainably managing Sydney Harbour and anyone who is passionate about keeping the harbour healthy for future generations and visitors to Sydney. As an international ideas competition we're also encouraging the best future thinkers from around the world to submit their ideas.
Who will be on the jury?
An expert panel of international, national and leading local landscape architects, climate scientists, harbour managers, ecologists, climate adaptation researchers, educators and publishers.
What resources does AILA need?
Financial, works-in-kind and your moral support will be critical and we have a range of categories including sponsors, partners, friends and ambassadors.
AILA can provide you with an information package on each of these categories to help you decide the type of support you can offer for the ideas competition.
We look forward to your collaboration with AILA NSW and its partners on this exciting climate-friendly initiative to help future-proof Sydney Harbour.
