In the Pursuit of Housing, a design competition developed in 2005 is intended to engage younger members of the profession and student designers to think critically about the housing issues facing their generation. The BSA challenged submitters to design housing that they themselves could afford. The result was a group of 35 entries from 22 states across the United States and from Austria, Canada, and India. In 2007 40 entries from across the US and Canada were submitted.
The jurors were struck by the variety of work and the geographical spread of the projects. They found several compelling themes running through the work including: the idea of prefabrication, the concept of doubling uses, using traditional infill housing in a town where property values are lower, buying space collaboratively and leveraging the power of a group.
